About Ly Son Island
Known as “Re Island” as the only island in Quang Ngai province, Vietnam, Ly Son Island is located in North-East of Quang Ngai and is around 15 sea miles away from mainland. With area of 9.97 square km with three Islands: Lon Island, Be Island and Mu Cu island. This beautiful Island was formed about 25-30 million years ago because of volcanic eruptions, which led Island to have amazing natural landscapes and attract million turns of visitors to come there annually. Ly Son Island history is closely associated with community blocks of residents that have lived here for thousand years. Sa Huynh, Cham Pa, Viet are major classes of resident. They have close combination with the formation and development of this beautiful Island. Also, they are people who defended to protect island sovereignty and left valuable culture heritages. Ly Son Island was officially formed in January 1st, 1993 divided from Binh Son district, Quang Ngai Province.
Ideal Time to Visit
Visitors who have passion about long beaches with white sand shores, come there from June to September. In these times, climate is quite fine and full of sunshine and wind. If you get there in September, do not dismiss to bring Garlic – a famous speciality as a gift to your friends and family. However, the risk of storm in this time is relatively high because of hurricane season, which you need to prepare everything well to self-protect in case of storm. Another ideal time for you to visit this amazing Island is in 18th-20th Lunar March when you may take part in “Lễ thề khao lính Hoàng Sa”. Commonly, the best time for everyone to visit Ly Son Island is from December to June of following year. An important thing visitors should take care is that you should make plan for your trip. If you are keen on, I may give you a suggestion to make plan your trip for 3 days for the perfect.
First day: Quang Ngai – Lon Island – Ly Son
Second day: Be Island – Ly Son
Third day: Ly Son – Quang Ngai
From Quang Ngai city, visitors come to Sa ky Island by the pathway of 24B Highway. Sa Ky Island is 20km away from Quang Ngai city. You may catch a bus with USD0.8/ticket and it takes about 1 hour. After that, to reach to Ly Son Island, people will go by high speed train with about USD5.2/ticket and it takes about 1.5 hours to get there. Note that there is only one bath of high speed train/day at 8a.m daily and for crowed days, there will be one more at 8h30a.m. Therefore, remember to wake up early not to miss the train. After placing your foods on Ly Son Island, you have many options for traveling transportation. You may hire pedicab or motorbike to visit landscapes there. If you travel with a team, it is better to hire a car for the convenience. To get to Be Island, you have two options that are by boat and by Cano. With boat, it may make you tired in case your health is not good if the sea waves are high. With Cano, it only takes about 10 minutes to get there. With such a fast speed, do not forget to enjoy strong feeling with waves. Note that the most important thing is your safety, therefore, take care anything for your perfect trip.
Interesting Places to Check Out
For your 3-days trip, focus on Lon and Be islands’ landscapes because almost attractive points are concentrated there. Visitors should definitely check in with lily-white Garlic fields that are the most featured speciality of Ly Son Island. As experienced visitors in Ly Son, people advise that once setting foot in this beautiful Island, you must go see these places first.
Hang Temple (Known as Rock Temple) is located in An Hai commune, Ly Son island. The Temple was built under King Le Kinh Tong by a man named Tran Cong Thanh- one of the men built ancient An Vinh. The reason for the name of the Temple is that the whole campus of this temple lies in the biggest rock cave in Ly Son Island. Hang Temple is beautiful with 20m steep cliffs, the color of the lava makes Hang Temple more and more attractive
To Vo Gate
To Vo gate is actually a small rocky outcrop located closely to the sea. This is one of the most attractive check-in destinations when setting foot in Ly Son for visitor who have passion about taking photos. You also come here with friends to catch the moment when sunrise comes up or when sunset falls down.
Mu Cu Island
Located in the east of Island and is about 3.2 km from the district center and near to An Hai. This is a beautiful place impressed by the black stone with unique styles. Hon Mu Cu Island is also the ideal place for resting and watching the sun rise on the island.
Thoi Loi peak and National flagpole on Thoi Loi peak
Formed from a volcano that was extinguished, Thoi Loi is the highest peak of Ly Son (149m). Currently, the top of peak is a freshwater lake with a volume of 30,000 m3 fresh water supplying for the entire two large islands and little islands. National flagpole on Thoi Loi peak is 20m in height with the main side is towards Hoang Sa islands. The architecture of the flagpole includes the base, stairs, the flagpole body and the campus around consisting of concrete floor and lights. In the front of the flagpole is the specific parameters of the flagpole.
Be Island, also known as An Binh Island is just as its name for a very small area. However, it has a beautiful beach with white sand lane, surrounded by high cliffs bow, waves and white foam. When setting your foot in Be Island, you should walk around the island and visit beautiful scenery, the garlic fields, the beach at the end of the island and back to the pier to take a break to eat.
What to Eat
Because foods in Ly Son Islands are not as diverse as in the mainland, the main dishes are almost from sea foods. You may either eat out or order to be delivered to your hotel. The price is not too expensive with around USD2.2 – USD7.1/people. Do not dismiss to enjoy the special dishes prepared by local people.
Seaweed Salad is one of the specialties of the island of Ly Son. The flavor of seaweed salad is unforgettable. This salad is made from the stalks of seaweed like the branches of coral, blue in the mix the basil stalks above, add the peanuts and onion flavor to stimulate the sense of smell.
Ly Son Island is known as the kingdom of garlic. Garlic is processed into attractive delicious salad. The special thing is that Ly Son garlic salad is made from male garlic. After harvesting, people only use the trunk of garlic, remove the outer shell, wash and steam until cooked. Then, mix with spices, sprinkle little peanut. The garlic salad is impressed by pungent flavor of garlic.
One of the specialties of Ly Son is the king crab. King crab reverentially called king of the crabs. Historically, the species of king crab specialty is advanced by the king crab meat soft, fragrant and nutritious.
Where to stay
No luxury hotels and guesthouses with modern services in Ly Son Island will bring you interesting experiences with rural lifestyle. Price for these small hotels and guesthouses is around USD7.1 – USD20.0 per night depending on numbers of people. If you are in a team, it is better to hire a guesthouse because they may offer 6 people per room at maximum. Thanh Loi, Dai Duong, Binh Yen are my suggestions on guesthouse for you and preferably, you should make some researches on price in case of new price updates.
